Chapter 1
(cont'd)
Lauren is going about her day when the shockwave of the explosion hits her car and the area around her. She taps on her brakes out of reaction. The sky turns colors and ends up brown with smoke almost instantly. Her eyes grow wide as she senses the impending danger when she sees the UFO coming out of the sky and heading for her car. She slams on her brakes now. The car comes to a stop when the front end crashes into a huge piece of debris that lands in front of the car, apparently from the explosion. If she hadn’t slowed through this process the huge chunk of metal would have landed on top of her car or even behind her. The car bumps a few more times as her car is rear-ended by another car which in turn is rear-ended by another car. The UFO is obviously a piece of machine that became airborne in the explosion.
Lauren picks up her cell and calls 911 emergency. The lines are busy! Damn. She disconnects and then calls again with success. 2 rings and the call is answered. The operator explains that there is an overload in the system as a result of the explosion and the debris that has covered the area. The operator asks if there are any apparent injuries. Lauren looks around but sees no injury to her or anyone within view. Since Lauren is unharmed other than a bruise from the seat belt and the airbag, the operator asks for a location and says that emergency crews will get to the area as soon as possible. Lauren disconnects in disbelief and looks around again. Seeing that all movement in traffic has stopped she attempts to open her door. She is surprised as someone knocks on her window. The woman standing there is visibly shaken but shows no apparent injuries as well.
“Are you ok?”
“I seem to be but the door is stuck, “ Lauren replies.
“I am the car behind you. It all happened so fast. I couldn’t stop in time. But then neither could the others!”
“I’ll try to get out through another door.” She motions to the passenger door.
The other woman moves around to that side of the car to offer some help and is joined by others involved in the crash. Some of the others are looking at the huge chunk of machinery lodged in the front of Lauren’s car. Lauren climbs over to the passenger side of the car and exits out the door that will open. She looks at the front of the car in disbelief.
“What the heck is this and how did this happen?” looking around at the others.
“It was an explosion,” from one person.
“You are lucky to be alive!” from another person.
Ash is raining down on everyone. They are on a highway adjacent to a chemical plant. The air is becoming increasingly hard to breathe as smoke and the chemical content increases. Lauren pulls a scarf out from around her neck and breathes through it to filter some of the airborne dust and ash.
“We should get out of this air! It might be toxic,” she yells.
She looks around to see some offices and stores across the street. She looks around to be sure it’s safe and then starts running in that direction along with everyone else following her. She hears sirens coming towards them and stands under the awning, waving to the police and ambulance vehicles approaching the scene. The first officer exits his vehicle and pulls out a microphone to ask,” Where is the person who drove this vehicle?” pointing to Lauren’s car.
She waves again catching his view. He motions for her to stay there and he will come to her. His first reaction was to snap some quick pictures with his digital camera after which he starts walking in her direction.
The officer reaches her location, introduces himself and begins the usual questions.
